Making Exceptional Care Work for Your Family Budget

As a clinician who personally navigates commercial insurance for my own family, I completely understand the hesitation around a cash-pay practice. If you had told me years ago that I wouldn’t contract directly with insurance networks, I wouldn't have believed you.

But in the traditional insurance model, providers are often forced to rush through complex pediatric evaluations in 30 minutes, squeeze dozens of kids into a single week, or wait months to see a child who is struggling. I built this practice to do things differently; to give your child uncompromised, deploy thorough attention and to give you a responsive provider you can actually reach.

Choosing private pay doesn’t mean ignoring your insurance. It means putting your child’s timeline and care quality first, while utilizing your health plan in a savvier way.

Above is a list of the CPT codes (the universal codes insurance companies use to process medical claims) used at STRIDE. Because we provide these transparently, you are equipped with everything you need to unlock your insurance benefits.

Out-Of-Network (OON) Reimbursement

Most commercial PPO plans have robust out-of-network mental and behavioral health benefits. Depending on your plan, insurance companies often reimburse families 50%-80% of our flat-rate fees once your deductible is met.

Meeting Your Deductible Faster

If you have a high-deductible plan and haven’t met your out-of-pocket maximum for the year, you don’t lose that money. Most commercial insurance companies allow you to submit our Superbills to be applied directly to your overall deductible balance. Every dollar you invest in your child’s care brings you closer to meeting your family’s annual deductible, so your insurance kicks in to cover other healthcare costs sooner.

Pre-Tax Savings (HSA/FSA)

Pediatric psychiatric evaluations and ongoing behavioral care are fully qualifying medical expenses. You can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) debit cards to pay for services directly, using tax-free dollars to immediately reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Contacting your insurance can be overwhelming. Here are some questions to have ready when you call the “Member Services” number on the back of your insurance card:

  1. “Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health?”

  2. “What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much has been met this year?”

  3. “If I haven’t met my out-of-network deductible yet, will the full amount listed on my Superbill be credited directly toward satisfying that deductible balance?”

  4. “Once the deductible is met, what is the ‘allowable amount’ or reimbursement percentage for these specific CPT codes?”

  5. “How do I submit a Superbill and how will I be notified once it’s processed?

Visualizing the Insurance Math

To see how your insurance benefits lower the actual cost of your child’s care, let’s look at two hypothetical scenarios for the STRIDE comprehensive intake that takes place across two specialized appointments within a 30-day window.

Scenario A: Your Deductible is Already Met (Direct Reimbursement)

If you have already met your annual deductible, your insurance company will send a check directly to you to cover a portion of the sessions on the Superbill.

You pay upfront: $700 (Initial Psych Eval) + $500 (Lifestyle Assessment) = $1,200

Your PPO plan covers: typically 70% of the allowable amount.

Insurance sends you a check for: $840

Your true out-of-pocket cost: $360

Scenario B: Your Deductible is NOT Met (Deductible Credit)

You pay upfront: $700 (Initial Psych Eval) + $500 (Lifestyle Assessment) = $1,200

You Submit Superbills: Either two separate Superbills or one for both appointments

The Big Benefit: Your insurance knocks a full $1,200 off your family's annual deductible. You instantly skyrocket closer to your out-of-pocket maximum, meaning your insurance plan will step in to pay 100% for your family’s other medical needs, dental expenses, or prescription drugs much earlier in the year.
